AEO vs SEO: what actually changed.

SEO gets you ranked on a search results page. AEO gets you named in an AI answer. Here's a plain-English guide to the difference — and why it matters now.

Guide · 8 min read · Updated August 2026

The short version.

SEO — Search Engine Optimization — is the practice of getting your website to rank highly on search engines like Google. AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the practice of getting your brand found, understood, and cited by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links. AEO optimizes for being named in a generated answer. They overlap, but they are not the same discipline — and as buyers shift from searching to asking, AEO is becoming its own priority.

What SEO is.

SEO is two decades old and well understood. When someone types a query into Google, the search engine returns a ranked list of links, and SEO is the work of earning a high position on that list — so more people click through to your site.

It's built around a few core levers:

Keywords

Understanding the terms people search for, and creating content that matches that intent.

Content

Publishing pages that thoroughly and usefully answer what searchers want.

Backlinks & authority

Earning links and signals that tell Google your site is credible.

Technical health

Making sure search engines can crawl, index, and render your pages.

What AEO is.

AEO is new, because the thing it optimizes for is new. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity a question, they don't get a list of links — they get an answer, often naming a few specific brands or citing a few specific sources. AEO is the work of being one of those named or cited brands.

It's built around different levers:

Legibility

Making sure AI engines can access and clearly understand what you are and who you're for.

Trust & citations

Earning the credibility signals that make an engine cite you as a source, not just mention you.

Answerability

Structuring content so it directly resolves the questions people ask AI.

Multi-engine presence

Being found across all four major engines — which each behave differently.

Where they overlap (and where they don't).

AEO isn't a replacement for SEO, and good SEO isn't wasted on AEO. Clean, well-structured, authoritative content helps both — an engine that can crawl and trust your site is more likely to both rank it and cite it.

But the assumptions diverge in ways that matter. SEO thinking centers on one engine and a finite set of keywords. AEO has to account for four engines that answer differently, questions that are open-ended rather than fixed, and responses that change from one query to the next. Optimizing to rank a page is not the same as optimizing to be the source of an answer — and treating them as identical is where a lot of brands go wrong.

Why this shift is happening now.

01

Buyers are asking, not searching

More people now open ChatGPT or Perplexity to get a recommendation before they ever run a Google search. The first impression of your brand is increasingly formed in an AI answer.

02

The answer replaces the list

A ranked list gave every result a chance. An AI answer names three brands. Being absent isn't ranking low — it's not existing in the answer at all.

03

There's no incumbent yet

SEO is a mature, crowded discipline. AEO is early — which means the brands that take it seriously now can establish a position before everyone else arrives.

How to start with AEO.

You don't need to abandon SEO to start on AEO. The first step is simply knowing where you stand: how AI engines currently find, understand, and cite you — and where you're absent.

  1. STEP 1

    Measure your baseline

See how each of the four engines currently describes and recommends you. You can't improve what you can't see.

  2. STEP 2

    Find the gaps

Identify the questions where competitors are named and you're not.

  3. STEP 3

    Improve legibility, trust, and answerability

Make your content easier to access, more credible, and structured to be the answer.

Measuring that baseline across all four engines is exactly what Crawlability does — it's the AEO instrument, the way an SEO tool is the SEO instrument.

Common questions

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. They're complementary. SEO earns rankings on search engines; AEO earns citations in AI answers. Good content helps both, but they optimize for different outcomes and require some different work.

What does AEO stand for?

Answer Engine Optimization — the practice of improving how AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity find, understand, trust, and cite your brand.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They're often used interchangeably. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) both describe optimizing for AI-generated answers. The core idea is the same: being found and cited by AI engines rather than only ranked by search engines.

Will my existing SEO help my AEO?

Often, yes. Clean, accessible, well-structured, authoritative content helps engines both rank and cite you. But strong SEO doesn't guarantee AI visibility — many well-ranked brands are absent from AI answers entirely.

How do I measure my AEO performance?

By checking how AI engines actually respond when asked about your category — whether you're named, cited, and how you're described, across each engine. That measurement is what tools built specifically for AEO provide.
